I’ve been using the new Duet model railway controller for a few weeks now, and I have to say I’m really impressed. The first thing you notice is how solid and well-built it feels. The black finish and metal controls make it look like a piece of high-end audio gear. It actually looks good sitting on the layout, which is a nice change from the usual toy-like controllers.
What really sets it apart, though, is how flexible it is. You get two controllers, and you can assign either one to either track output, or isolate them entirely just by flipping a switch. It’s perfect for a layout with multiple sections or when you want to hand off control between operators.
It also has proper short circuit detection, which works exactly as you’d want: fast and clean, without blowing fuses or frying anything. I was also pleased to see it has transient suppression built in. It might not be something everyone thinks about, but it definitely makes a difference, especially if you’re running older motors. Everything runs a bit smoother and quieter.
The controls are a joy to use. They’ve got a nice weight and resistance to them - very precise, not the loose or plastic feel you get with some controllers. Speed control is smooth and consistent.
All up, the Duet feels like it was designed by someone who actually uses model trains. It’s practical, great to use, and looks fantastic. Easily one of the best DC controllers I’ve come across in years.
